The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Texas at Arlington has several fellowships for qualified students to pursue a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering department. These prestigious GAANN (Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need) fellowships are provided by a grant awarded to our department by the U.S. Department of Education . Each of our GAANN fellows receives a generous stipend (up to 24,000 per calendar year, depending on individual need as determined by the FAFSA application ) plus educational expenses to cover tuition, fees, and certain other expenses.
Our GAANN fellowships are for U.S. citizens or permanent residents to pursue a Ph.D. degree in our department. These fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis to outstanding applicants satisfying the eligibility criteria. The fellows are expected to obtain their Ph.D. degrees within fives years from the start of the fellowship. Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. In selecting our GAANN fellows we do not discriminate based on gender, race, national origin, color, disability, or age. GAANN qualification is evaluated on a yearly basis and extensions are made depending on the availability of funds and student performance.
A GAANN fellowship applicant must fill out the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. The Federal School Code for the University of Texas at Arlington is 003656, which should be indicated in step 6 of the FAFSA form. Once the FAFSA form is processed, a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be generated. The applicant must send a copy (a photocopy or an e-mail copy are acceptable) of the resulting SAR to Prof. Ishfaq Ahmad (e-mail: iahmad@cse.uta.edu). Moreover, they should fillout the questionnaire (download from the left side of this webpage) and email it to Prof. Ahmad.
The applicant must also apply to the Ph.D. program in our department. For this purpose the applicant should contact Dr. Bahram Khalili (e-mail: khalili@cse.uta.edu), who is our Graduate Program Advisor. There is no separate GAANN application needed in order to be considered for a GAANN fellowship (besides the SAR and the completion of the application to our Ph.D. program). The decision of awarding a GAANN fellowship will be made simultaneously when the admission decision is made to our Ph.D. program.
